Top caterers in Delhi for weddings: a practical selection framework

How to actually compare top caterers in Delhi for your wedding — the seven criteria that separate the studios from the order-takers, and the tasting questions most couples forget.

Every couple planning a wedding in Delhi NCR ends up with the same shortlist of ‘top caterers in Delhi’ — pulled from Instagram, wedding planners and a cousin who got married last December. The list looks impressive. The problem is that all the names start to blur after the third tasting, and the decision quietly defaults to whoever was friendliest in the meeting.

Here is the framework we wish more couples used — built from thirty years of running wedding catering in Delhi and watching what actually goes wrong on the night.

1. The kitchen, not the brochure

Every top wedding caterer in Delhi has a beautiful website. Far fewer will invite you to their actual kitchen. Ask to visit the prep kitchen before you sign. A clean, organised, calm kitchen on a Tuesday afternoon is the single best predictor of a clean, organised, calm service on your wedding night.

2. The same team you meet is the team that cooks

Big wedding caterers in Delhi often run multiple events the same evening. The chef at your tasting may not be at your wedding. Ask explicitly: ‘Will the chef I am meeting today be on the pass on my wedding day?’ Get the name in writing.

3. The tasting is the real interview

A generic ‘sampler tasting’ tells you nothing. Insist on tasting the exact menu you’re considering, plated the exact way it will be served. If a caterer pushes back on this for a wedding-scale booking, they’re not a top-tier studio — they’re a volume kitchen with good marketing.

4. Staffing depth and named roles

Ask for the deployment plan in writing: how many captains, how many stewards per 50 guests, who runs the floor, who runs the kitchen, who handles the live counters. A serious wedding caterer in Delhi knows these numbers off the top of their head. Vague answers here become long queues, cold food and a lost evening on the night.

  • 1 captain per 100–150 guests
  • 1 steward per 25–30 guests for plated, 1 per 40 for buffet
  • 1 dedicated chef per live counter
  • Named maître d’ on the floor end to end

5. Hygiene, FSSAI and insurance

Non-negotiables most couples never ask about. Top caterers in Delhi will have a valid FSSAI license, public liability insurance, and trained food handlers. If any of these are missing, walk away — no amount of presentation makes up for a food safety incident at your wedding.

6. Customisation, not menu fatigue

Top wedding caterers in Delhi will design a menu to your evening — your room, your guest profile, your family palate. Order-takers will hand you a fixed package and substitute one dish for another. Ask: ‘If I want to swap the dessert course entirely, what happens?’ The answer tells you which one they are.

7. Reference events you can actually verify

Photos are easy. Referenced weddings are not. Ask for two recent weddings of a similar guest count, and ask if you can call those couples. A top caterer in Delhi will say yes without flinching.

The right caterer for a wedding in Delhi isn’t the one with the most followers. It’s the one whose kitchen still feels calm at 11 p.m. on the night.
